BURNSIDE HIGH SCHOOL ROLL

Increase Of 230 Next Year

“The roll of the Burnside High School will be about 750 next year—an increase of 230. I would not choose for the school to become a great deal larger than this, but it seems we may have to expect a much larger number of pupils by 1963,” said the headmaster (Mr C. Cross) in his annual report at the school prize-giving ceremony last evening. Mr Cross said with the school now in its second year he was pleased to find a strong core of pupils emerging with the marks of firstclass citizenship. This augured well for the senior school. Addressing the parents. Mr Cross said that the future welfare of young persons demanded that parents should sometimes act against the inclinations of their children. “I am aware of the harmful effects of older persons who purchase the allegiance of young men and women by indulging them . and yielding to their caprices,” he said. “The boys and girls of today possess the same readiness as they ever did to rise to high and noble endeavour if we ask it of them. We, as parents, teachers, and members of the community surrounding them, are letting

them down if we do not demand the highest and the best from them,” said Mr Cross.
