SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS
“Attraction Lost” (N.Z. Press Association) LEVIN, Dec. 7. Teaching as a profession had lost its attraction and something had to be done about it. In a State educational system it was the State which bore the responsibility, said the principal of Horowhenua College (Mr A. Haley) at the annual prizegiving ceremony today. "We know there are staff shortages everywhere but there is only one period in life in which the foundations of a good general education can be laid and that is in the teens,” Mir Haley said. “There are going to be some weak foundations laid in the future, for life and livelihood.” The teacher ' shortage could not be emphasised too much. Teaching should be so highly regarded that youngsters would find difficulty in deciding whether to take up teaching, medicine. dentistry, engineering or accountancy; but it was not so regarded at present, said Mr Haley.
