HAND-MADE TOYS FOR C.O.R.S.O.
Women’s Institute Display
An outstanding display of more than a thousand handmade toys and dressed dolls, made by members of women’s institutes in the East Canterbury Federation, was staged recently in the Doyleston Hall, with Mrs W A. Pattison, president of the federation, as organiser. Toys of all shapes and sizes, giving evidence of ingenuity and good workmanship, were shown. Of the various themes carried out the “Teddy Bears’ Picnic.” with bears of all sizes and minute sandwiches and other party foods, was outstanding. The toys ranged from tiny mice to giant giraffes and elephants. The dolls were particularly good. All institutes in the federation helped with the display. During the afternoon Mr G. H. Coley spoke on the work of CORSO and accepted the toys on behalf of the organisation. Musical items given included pianoforte solos by Mrs W. E. Doak. songs by Mr Bruce Russell, pianoforte duets by Misses Barbara and Patricia Bohan and a sketch by Mesdames E. A. Alexander and C. A. Croft and Miss W. Hantz. Mrs Pattison thanked the performers and all who had made the display possible, and Mrs Bilbrough. group convener, conveyed thanks to the public for support and the Doyleston institute for acting as hostesses. Acknowledgement was also made of the help given by Day’s Motors in conveying the toys to Christchurch free of charge.
