. • The University ot Canterbury has not abandoned its contention that Nelson and Marlborough should be transferrod from the Wellington to the Canterbury university district. It will lodge another claim within five years. Yesterday there was a suggestion that university developments and population changes Warranted a commission on university boundaries. The Canterbury claim is based on the fact that fourfifths of university students from Nelson and Marlborough come to Canterbury. The Victoria University Council. Wellington, yesterday formally rejected Canterbury overtures for the • changeover. The letter said i that in the next five years ‘ developments in Wellington.) ■ improved hostel accommodai tion. and better transport ' would favour continuance in
linking Nelson and Marlborough with Wellington, Adirit education organisation was another factor. , * ' “Do we accept that as final?” Mr G. Manning asked at a meeting of the Canterbury University Council yesterday. “I don’t see any other steps we can take at present.'* replied the Chancellor (Mr C. . H. Perkinsl. > “We should raise the mat- . ter again at the end of the > present quinguennium in five i years," said Mr T. H. McCombs. ' "I feel that the time has ■ come for a commission to re- . define university bound- ■ aries." said Mr W. J. Cart--1 wright. “Population distribus tion has changed, branch unij versities have been formed. ■ and next year there will be l four autonomous universi- > ties.” Miss R. F. C. Tyndall said that Nelson and Marlborough were in the Wellington region of the Education Department.
