LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL NEWS
Seven letters of protest at increased rentals for garages built on Lyttelton streets or council property were read at last evening’s meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council An increase of rental from £1 5s to £4 was decided at a previous council meeting on the casting vote of the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett), A person who built a garage on the street was paying far less at the previous rate than a ratepayer who had his own garage on ms own property, said Mr Collett. An increase of rental of £4 seemed well justified. Cr. A R. Champion, supported by Cr. N. D. Parratt. said that he felt the new charge of £4 was too heavy. Cr. G. E. Boyd said that if a man pulled bis garage down, be could leave his car on the same spot for nothing at all. Cr. Parratt gave notice that he would move at the next council meeting that the motion to make an increased rental be rescinded. Bridle Path Road CiMtagcWork at the Lyttelton road tunnel face will necessitate the lower Bridle Path road being closed for about six weeks while massive retaining walls are constructed, according to a letter received from the District Commissioner of Works. The Bridle Path footpath at the bottom would remain open, the
letter said. The work would start almost immediately. Corsair Bay Jetty.— The poor and dangerous condition of the diving board and jetty at Corsair Bay called for urgent attention, said Cr. N D. Parratt. It was decided to ask the Lyttelton Harbour Board to submit a price for demolition of the structure and its ultimate replacement, and also to submit an alternative price for repairs to the jetty. It was also decided immediate steps be taken to block the diving board from sea,, or footpath access. Sale of Christaas Trees.— Permission was granted to the Sumner Round Table No. 9 group to sell Christmas trees from 9 a m. until fl p.m. on December 18 on the Fire Brigade site at Lyttelton.
