Mother Rescues Daughter
(N-Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 27. A young mother dived 10ft off a narrow foot bridge into the Makara river today to rescue her two-year-old daughter. The woman is Mrs J. McCarthy, of Main road, Makara. She had returned from a shopping trip in Wellington about 4.15 p.m. when her daughter, Mary Anne, went to the road to. welcome her home. The girl was accompanied by her brother, aged four, and a cousin, aged eight. While Mrs McCarthy was unloading some goods from her car she noticed her daughter's absence. The two boys and the mother began a search but it was some minutes before they saw Mary Anne come to the surface of the stream some distance from the bridge. Mrs McCarthy leaped in and brought the girl to shore. Mary Anne suffered only shock.
