SCIENCE BLOCK
Occupation Delav
The new £3 million science building for the University of Canterbury will not be ready, as desired, for 1965. But Dr. F. J. Llewellyn, chairman of the new University Grants Committee, has given an assurance that his members “will support the university in all reasonable requirements for accommodation to enable the science to remain on the central site for another year.” Although it was not mentioned at the meeting of the university council yesterday, the delay in approving the science building plans arose through increases from the original estimate of £2.5 million. which were detailed by the Minister of Education <Mr Tennant) a few months ago. Now. the Ministry of Works has formally advised Dr. Llewellyn that the buildings cannot be completed for use by 1965. although it is still expected that they will be completed by October or November of that year. This calculation is necessary for the contract. The Canterbury Vice-chan-cellor (Dr. L. L. FownaiU said yesterday that he had had discussions on the matter with Dr. Llewellyn and the Ministry of Works. The university would now apply to the University Grants Committee for a formal undertaking of responsibility for meeting any accommodation needs which might arise from the new completion date.
