Hay was no less convincing in a 230 yards race. In finishing third, from a Msec handicap, he was timed at 2min 58.2 sec—only LSsec outside the Canterbury senior record held by I. B. MacDonald. Hay, competing in senior ranks for the first time this season, should overhaul MacDonald’s figure of 2min 56Psec before long. Seemingly swimming wall within herself, Miss Nicholson recorded Smin 253aec in a 440 yards freestyle event. Although this did not match her effort over a similar distance at the Centennial Pool it was still a good swim in view of het earlier exertion in a sprint race. She was timed at MJsec for 100 yards in dead-beating for first with the promising junior swimmer, M. Gould. Faster Time Gould went oh to win the 440 yards event, repeating his success at this distance at the previous carnival. On Saturday, however, his time was 9.4 sec farter. Two young swimmers from the Fendalton club who should achieve gratifying results In the under-13 section this season, R. Sandom and M. Johnston, were to the fore in freestyle races. Both were winners over 100 yards —Sandom in . 70ffsec and Johnston in 71.7 sec—and
