Cycling FIRST SUMMER ROAD RACES
Avon Club Events At Papanui The summer road racing held by the Avon Amateur Cycling Club began on Saturday. Last year the club raced on a circuit at Bromley, but this year it has changed to a Papanui course, which starts and finishes on Claridges road. There was an excellent entry. The open race was a scratch event over 10 miles and a half. In the first lap, D. Wood and D. Gutry broke away from the field. R. Bush and R. Mann soon improved their positions as did P, Wood. D. Wood held his lead and finished 50 yards clear of Bush with Mann third. The handicap section went to C. Gane. Competition was keen in the novice race, over seven miles and a half. P. Clemence won from T. Tbbak and D. Gutry. P. McGarry, off 20 seconds, won the handicap section. ■ Results were:— Open Event.—D. Wood (Avon) 1, R. Bush (Papanui) 2, R. Mann (Papanui) 3, P. Wood (Avon) 4. Winner’s time, 27.-30. Handicap Section. —C. Gane (40sec) 1, D. Gutry (30sec) 2, R. Bush (15eec) 3. Novice Event.—P. Clemence 1, T. Tabak 2, D. Gutry 3. Winner’s time: 21:18.
