First Races In Junior Cherub Trials Series
Three of toe. five triad* to select tour Canterbury boats to sail in toe national Junior Cherub class contest in the New Year were lieSd on Lyttelton Harbour at the week-end. Four boats showed up in a group ahead of toe rest of toe fleet, end the change of water (to toe Estuary) tor toe compdetion of toe trials next weekend should Devour two of them. A meritorious performance was given by toe Charteris Bto yacht Hylite, skippered by E. W. Mace. Mace and his tor’ard hand. D. R. Mackie showed toe way to toe fleet on Saturday in a hand easterly, and used toeir combined weight of 23 stone to advantage when some good on-the-wind work was seen from them. In lighter conditions yesterday they were shaded by fellow ,club members J. and P. Rountree in Pania aixl otoers. Pania was toe tmdy boat which handled toe conditions with any tiling like competence, and its' two straight wins, which have put it at tog bead of the points table.' were deserved. Bali Hal Does Well A surprise was the steady sailing yesterday of toe Mount Pleasant boat Bali Hal. With A. F. Raper at toe helm and P. J. Brittenden crewing, toe boat had no show of cheNengtng Pania, but it touglit an interesting battle tor second place with the Christchurch club’s Tippin (L. McGrath and B. de Thier), and won it by 15 seconds. In the afternoon race Bali Hai had the lead, but lost it off toe wind because of inexperienced kite work. McGswto, who was Port of Lyttelton representative in lash season’s New Zealand Cornwell Cup contest, drove himself and his boat over toe whole course to bridge toe gap he had allowed Bali Ha® arid Pania to make cariy. and finally made up his ground on the final beat to toe finish. The boats crossed on opposite tacks—Tippin two lepgtos ahead. McGnato was plagued with crew troubte. After toe first race on Saturday it was realised that his regular crew. R. Randall, who had no Mod with him in toe afternoon. Would be over-age tor toe national contest (toe upper limit being 10). McGrath was able to call on toe services of de Tiller—Canterbury’s leading P Class skipper last season—for yeeterdey’s races, but will have to make new arrangements tor toe final races as de Thier wiH be saili.n th® Oamterbury Finn next week-end.
