Rugby SHORT TOURS

The, vice-president of the South African Rugby .Union Board, Mr G.‘ J: Potgieter, today strongly supported short international tours. Speaking at a special meeting of the board, Mr Potgieter said short tours made for happy relationships between countries among both players and officials. He could not see they did harm to club Rugby. In fact, he felt domestic Rugby benefited from the keenness of players wanting to represent their provinces against the tourists. Initiating a discussion on the state of South African Rugby, the chairman of the selectors, Mr Frank Mellish, named excessive kicking and scrummaging as the main evils. Rugby was primarily a handling game and spectators were tired of excessive kicking, which he felt should be confined to Mr Mellish thought the present scrummage law “completely unsatisfactory.” Far too much time was wasted getting the ball into and out of the scrum and the
