RACING Outsiders Succeed In Waikato Gold Cup

"Ins Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, November. 26. , Clymon snatched victory by a head in the Waikato Gold (Jup at Te Rapa yesterday. Half a furlong from the finish it seemed that one of half a dozen horses might win. Within a few yards of the post it was. all Floutulla, but he was beaten by Clymon and Jim’s Count.

Floutulla only half a head behind Jim’s Count and toe next closest—Senor. Lavish Counters and Bemuse—w ere right on his quarters. Lampada. the each-way favourite. beat only six to the finish and other disappointments were Gita no (twelfth) and Beauzami (eleventh). Clymon was the twelfth favourite each way and paid £25 16s toe a win and £8 for a place. That he ran at such long odds was not sur-p-ising. because he had not been successful for close on twa years. In between times he ' made 18 attempts. Jim’s Count was an even bigger outsider, only Biltong and Gilt carrying less money on the win-and-place machine. His return for a place was £ 19 9s 6d and Floutulla’s was £6 10s. Clymon'* performance was first class. As well as giving all his opponents except one a fair start from the six furlongs. he went the mile and a half course in 2min 29 4-5 see. That is good time anywhere and the equal of the best in the Waikato Gold Cup.

An eight-year-old gelding, by Contact from Lady Teo. Clymon is owned and trained by Mr C. A. Speake. of Cambridge. His rider in the gold cup was J. P. Hayes, a young apprentice from Te Awamutu who is beginning to make a name for himself. Recently be was successful on Sea Heroine, when she paid £ll9. As close as the finish was in the gold cup it was even tighter in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Sutherland Handicap. The Stratford three-year-old. Cabriere, won with only a nose to snare from Uplands Lad. after he had been shaken up very strenuously from the furlong.

Cabriere had 41b more than with 8-4. and a smart field of sprinters to contend with so his performance was very good. It was his second win in three starts this season.

Had Uplands Lad not tried to shift his ground under the whip he might have beaten Cabriere. As it was he just nosed On Purpose from second. Uplands Lad had not shown such good form for a long while. On Purpose, a five-year-old mare feirly new to open company, also went very encouragingly. Cabriere was the win-and-place favourite and a warm far.cy w ith off-course bettors on the double. His win-and-place dividends were £4 Is 6d and £1 15s Sd and his doubles return with Clymon was £172 7s for £l. On-course. the totalisator handled £116.070 1 ss, including £23.486 15s on doubles. PROMINENT EAKLY Daysun. Lampada. Lavish Countess and Special Man (wide) were the most prominent running for positions in the Waikato Gold Cup. With a round to travel Lampada. Biltong. Special Man, Bemuse and Daysun were together trying for the lead.

Vivian came next, then Lavish Countess. Gitano. Ruthless Tax and Ou Demand. Approaching the mile Special Man went ahead by a length from Bemuse. Lampa da ran third and Daysun fourth, followed by Lavish Countess, Biltong. Ruthless Tax, Vivian. Gitano (outside). On Demand, Jim’s Count and Floutulla.

Special Man continued in front past the half-mile and into the straight. Top Liner improved and became very prominent Lampada ran handily and Bemuse. Gitano, Old Parr (wide), Picaroon,' and Jim's Count were handy. Floutulla put in a good run. By the time they reached the furlong Floutulla had come to the front with Jim's Count in pursuit. A little further on Clymon made a great bid well out towards the centre and won in the last stride. Jim’s Count was second, shading Floutulla and Senor came fourth. Lavish Countess. Bemuse, Ruthles Tax, Marwon. Old Parr, and Special Man were well bunched next. Then followed Beauzami, Gitano, Special Terms. Daysun, Atlas and Lampada.

Admiral’s Fair dwelt at the start of the Sutherland Handicap and Otematata, Cabriere. Gold Raider, Hot Punch and Cbarmian got away quickly. Uplands Lad and Gonzales were next, then Taumai. Glen Count and Descabella.

Passing the half-mile Charmian and Cabriere were the first two from Gold Raider. Glen Count was very close on the outside. Anywhere. Kalamira and Taumai were next before Khorazami, Gonzales and Descabella. Cabriere shook off Charmian as they came to the straight Glen Count challenged and Uplands Lad was prom inent. A furlong from the finish Cabriere was being urged very strongly to keep the lead.

Uplands Lad continued to battle very gamely and Cabriere beat him by a nose. On Purpose, after making a strong dab, was almost in line, third. Descabella ran on for fourth. Kalamira was fifth, followed by Gold Raider. Taumai, Glen Count. Gonzales and Otematata. Relight. Anywhere and Blue Beard were at the end.
