OVERFAT LAMBS
Price Causing . Concern
Concern at the low price being paid thia season far overfat lambs was express,-a by Mr C. Hilgendorf, a member of the Meat Board, at the export iamb competition at Islington last week. Mr W. M. Cleland, general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Cotapany, said afterwards it was unfortunate that the only reel penalty for overfat lambs was a monetary one. Mr Hilgendorf recalled that last season graders had taken from lambs for export a small number of eight* and fours because they were overfat, and this year this practice had been extended to the two*.
He said the criticism of oyerfatnes* in these grade’ did not apply to fnem generally, but rather to some lambs in them. Last season he said the peculiar position bad arisen of moat companies not making a deduction for the>e lambs, although the real purpose was to discourage sending away this class of lamb He was. however, very alarmed at the very low price that might be paid tor these lambs this year.
