WOOL-HANDLING COMPETITIONS

Minister Comments On High Standards

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, November 26.

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Hayman) attended “people’s day” at the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday. Wherever he had been, he had seen a high standard of shearing, and had noticed the interest the New Zealand Wool Board had taken in the shearing industry and the woolhandling business since Mr Godfrey Bowen joined the board’s organisation, said the Minister.

He complimented the local A. and P. Association on its high level of organisation. The general conduct of the show left nothing to be desired, and stock indicated good husbandry. “The interest in production and handling of wool to producethe top grade article is indicative of the stability of the wool industry for the future,” the Minister said. Mr J. Ball, the judge of the team shearing and woolhandling competitions, said these showed the result of training, experience, and hard work to present the wool in the ideal manner for market.

Three teams (two open and one Young Farmers’ Clubs) are eligible to take part in the South Island finals at Christchurch. Results were: Open.—Scott Bros. (Waimate), 87.3 points, 1; R. R. Crampton (Fairlie), 85.5, 2; B. G. Casey (Pleasant Point), 84.1, 3.
