BOGUS ORDERS FOR GOODS
Deliveries Made To Brighton Resident
A prankster last week caused almost £5O worth of liquor, eight cubic yards of shingle and several cords of cut wood to be delivered to a New Brighton resident. The butt of toe practical joker, Mr W. S. Haxell, retired, of 75 Beresford street, has told the police he is reluctant to go out for fear of finding his drive choked with shingle or wood on his return.
Seven city firing and seven carriers have been involved in toe hoaxes, toe first of which occurred on November 16 when a telephone call caused a dealer to call at Mr Maxell's house believing he had some second-hand articles to sell.
Early last week a truck arrived with four yards of shingle. Mr Haxell was home to refuse delivery, but his driveway was blocked with shingle when he came home on another occasion. The shingle had been ordered by telephone from a different firm and delivered by a different carrier. A load of firewood arrived on Friday morning when Mr Haxell was again at home and he was able to explain toe order was not his. Shortly afterwards another carrier arrived with another load of firewood. Early that afternoon about £24 worth of liquor was delivered and a similar order from another merchant arrived toe same evening. Mr Haxell notified toe police on Wednesday but so far they have been unable to trace the culprit.
