Congo Units To Be Withdrawn

(NZ.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LEOPOLDVILLE, November 25. The United Nations today dropped a plan ta disarm the mutinous Congolese garrison at Kindu, but it agreed the two units believed responsible for the massacre of 13 Italian airmen two weeks ago should be withdrawn immediately.

The proposals were contained in a reply to a letter from the Congolese Prime Minister (Mr Cyrille Adoula) by the Swedish Congo United Nations chief (Dr. Store Linner).

the Congolese Government of its responsibility to cooperate with the United Nations and severely punish the guilty soldiers. United Nations sources earlier estimated that between 50 and 200 troops were involved in the massacre. Observers who recently returned from Kindu said many troops had left and it was feared the units responsible might no longer be there.

Dr. Linner said today the responsible units were already known to the Congolese Government. United Nations preparations therefore to disarm the whole garrison for an on-the-spot investigataion had become “inopportune.” He believed it preferable the troops be brought immediately to Leopoldville where they could be interrogated by a mixed United Nations Congolese commission.
