SILICA SAND SEARCH
Leithfield Beach Area
Crown Crystal Glass Pty., Ltd., was granted a licence by the District Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr G. J. Watt) on Thursday to prospect for silica sand over an area of 40 acres at Liethfield Beach.
For the company. Mr F. J. Shaw said that mining had been carried on at Mount Somers for many years, but the supply of sand was running out there. Alternative supplies had to be found and several South Island areas had been investigated. There were several objections to the application for a prospecting licence, but most were withdrawn when Mr Watt said that objectors would be heard again if the company applied for a mining licence.
