OUTCROP OF OBSIDIAN
Discovery Near Taupo “The Pres*’- Special Service AUCKLAND, Nov. 24. The discovery near Lake Taupo of large outcrops of obsidian, the black volcanic rock used by the Maoris as cutting edges, has demolished theories that the only source was Mayor Island, in the Bay of Plenty. “We have thought for some time that the obsidian came from more than one place.” said Mr R. Green, senior lecturer in prehistory at Auckland University. “But this is the first mined site we have found, other than Mayor Island.” Credit for the discovery goes to Mr T. Hoskings, a member of the New Zealand Archaelogical Association, who lives in Taupo township. Mr Hoskings found lumps and flakes of obsidian in Whangamata Bay. several miles west of the township.
