SAVING FEED

Drawing farmers* attention to the possibility of early weaning of lambs in dry weather to save feed on ewes, Mr J. H. Oldfield, who is in charge of the farm advisory service at Canterbury Agricultural College, said at the college field day this week that it was quite obvious that a lot of old ewes were not giving enough milk for a cup of tea. He wondered whether, under such conditions, farmers looked sufficiently critically at their ewes and lambs. That lambs could be successfully weaned at eight or nine weeks of age was something that had been learned from the last drought. On the mixed cropping farm at the college lambs had been weaned this season at an average of 1(1 weeks but he thought that they could have been weaned even a week or two earlier.
