FLYOVER OR UNDERPASS

Roads Council Support

The highest priority for grade separation at the Moorhouse avenue - Colombo street intersection, either by a flyover bridgs or an underpass in the avenue, was urged by the No. 14 District Roads Council yesterday at the halfyearly review of works. When the council considered a schedule of transfers of finance on State highways. which included £7OOO from Moorhouse avenue. Mr A. R. Guthrey (City Council) proposed that the grade separation should be given the highest priority and that the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman), who is also chairman of the National Roads Board, should be advised. There was no hope of the project being included in the estimates for this year, the District Commissioner of Works (Mr E. C. Smart) said. The Minister was particularly interested in the intersection and had taken a movie of it. Mr F. W. Freeman assured the council of the support of the Automobile Association. Canterbury, and said that when a survey was conducted recently. 13.000 used the intersection daily. If there had been an underpass or flyover, there would not have been the same criticism about the closing of the Durham street crossing, said Mr W. P. Glue (City Council). Another City Council representative, Mr T. D. Flint, protested that reading expenditure of £6m in the South Island against £l6m in the North Island was not an equitable distribution when population and road tax were considered. No. 14 district seemed to suffer in particular.
