RAFT RACE FOR SCOUTS
Initiative Test in Estuary Rafts are being built and tested by various scout groups In Christchurch in preparation for a novel teat of Initiative. The rafts, to be of “scout construction” with no nails, ecrews, nuts, bolts or weldings used, will compete in a “Kon Tiki" expedition on the Estuary on Saturday, December 2. Meals will be cooked aboard and the rafts must be propelled by sail or paddle and oar only. They ' must carry a 7ft mast flying the troop colours. The expedition will be conducted in three sections, for the scout, senior scout and rover groups. AU will be required to sail from Redcliffs to Morten’s jetty al Mount Pleasant—about one mile. Scout rafts will be crewed by two boys while the senior scouts and rovers will have teams at four. Four sausages and four eggs must be cooked during the voyage by the senior scouts and rovers. The younger scouts will cook aboard at the end of the trip. Points will be awarded for construction, launching, cooking methods and equipment, manoeuvrability and navigation. seaworthiness and time This will be the third such expedition organised for scouts in Christchurch. The first was held in February 1960. and proved so popular the boys asked for it to be ‘run again.
