A new Ellerman-Bucknalt cnrgo liner, the City of Sydney. paying her first visit to New Zealand, is now discharging general cargo, including newsprint, from St Lawrence porta at Lyttelton The City of Sydney - was built at Barclay Curie’s Glasgow shipyard tn 1980. and has already made two voyages from North .American Atlantic ports to Australia She has a gross tonnage of 10,551 tons, and is 512 ft long, with a 67ft beam. i
She has a crew of 93, including the master and two apprentices. Apart from European officers, the bulk of the crew are Pakistanis and Indians Primarily built for the carriage of general cargo, the City of Sydney has, nevertheless. 108.000 eu. ft. of refrigerated cargo-space. Four of her five holds are forward of the bridge giving her an unusually long foredeck. She is fitted with roller hatchlids. Tffie ship has modern navlgational appliances such as
radar, gyro, radio-telephone, and other features. Upon completion of discharge at Lyttelton, the City of Sydney will sail for Dunedin, probably thia week-end. but will return to Lyttelton soon to load general cargo for North American Atlantic ports The photograph above shows the City of Sydney passing beneath the Jacques Cartier bridge at Montreal when proceeding to a toedbefore sailing for New Zealand on her present voyage.
