Milk For Singapore
The production of liquid sterilised milk in Singapore is another success for the New Zealand Dairy Production and Marketing Board in its search for new markets. This year the board hopes to sell 20 per cent, by weight of dairy products to markets outside Britain. Four years ago the figure was 14 per cent., and not so many years ago only 3 per cent. The Singapore venture is another of the board’s co-operative efforts with local enterprise. It is possible because of the technical progress that has shown the way to transform milk solids from this country into liquid milk in Eastern consuming countries. Before this technical progress, New Zealand was at a disadvantage in such countries because the cost of canning condensed and evaporated milk was much higher in New Zealand than in the more highly
industrialised countries. ; Now, powdered milk is sent ‘ from New Zealand and is i treated and sold as liquid 1 milk at prices that are ’ competitive with other ] countries’ tinned milks. New! 1 Zealand is naturally inter- ! * ested in the commercial ( aspect of the venture.; Nevertheless, it is satisfactory to know that marching with trade in this case is a|i dietary improvement for' the Singapore people. In L Asian countries the value 11 of milk as a food has be-;‘ come more widely known since the war, probably as;: a result of the various postwar relief schemes; and rising standards of living increase a demand for milk. 1 It is indeed satisfactory that ’ New Zealand is helping to i meet this demand, while j helping itself commercially ’ —thanks to the initiative 1 both in marketing and re- * search of the Dairy Produc- , tion and Marketing Board, i
