Sir,—The advertised features of this unusual house include “complete insulation” and that rather vague term, “planned design.” Insulation of concrete walls, which form some 48 per cent, of the exterior, but what about the single glass which forms the remaining 52 per cent? Have you ever felt the cold air coming off a window in winter? And the heating—an open fire of extremely poor radiating design. Design? How many times do you have to crack your head on the cabinet over the bathroom basin before you either remove the cabinet or wash in the kitchen? Spill water off the flat sink bench, especially at the back where it would disappear where? Clean splashes off the window behind the sink bench—after every washing-up operation? And the bathroom ventilation —internal? Surely architects don’t suggest this design is either convenient or practical for Canterbury conditions where it was displayed.— Yours, etc., COMFORT. September 5, 1961. [The advertisers were invited to comment on this letter. No reply has been received. Ed., “The Press.”]
