Magistrate's Court Licence Suspended For Dangerous Driving

“I am going to give you a chance.” Mr A. P. Blair, SJd., told Owen Errol Webber, aged 24. a driver, when he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to a charge of dangerous driving.

He was fined £8 and his licence was cancelled for one year witii the proviso toot he would be permitted to drive for his employer in his employer’s business. Sergeant E. S. Tuck said that about 7.15 p.m. on September 27. two constable® in a patrol car had seen Webber backing hia vehicle, a petrol tanker, in High street A cyclist behind the tanker had difficulty in getting out of the way. The constables had then followed the tanker for some distance, and in Ferry road had checked the speed of the tanker at 40 miles an hour. Also in Ferry road the tanker was seen to overtake two cars ,one of which was passing the other, so that there were three vehicles abreast. This caused a car coming the other way to pull hard over to the side of the road and brake to avoid a cyclist. When stopped. Webber admitted he had been travelling at more than 30 miles an hour

“It is not just a question of exceeding the limit." said the Magistrate. “I titink the fact has been demonstrated that for a time you cannot drive any more.” Webber said if he lost his driving licence he would lose bis job. Tire Magistrate then said he would give him another chance. “However, you now have two charges for dangerous 'driving and if you come before the court again you will be hit herd.” CARELESS DRIVING It was obviously a case of bad driving and he felt Bunn should be put off the road for a while, said the Magistrate when S3 w^T d .J r !li? 01s Bunn . aged 19 (Mr H. W. Thompson), appeared and pleaded guilty to a charge ot using a vehicle without due care and attention. He was fined £5 and his licence was suspended for ux months.

Sergeant Tuck said that at 8.15 p.m. on July 28 Bunn was travelling along the DunsandelLeeston highway in a northerly direction. As the car approached the Rakaia river road, at a speed which Bunn estimated as 45 miles an hour, it left the road, cleared < ditch and a gorse hedge land came to rest t a field 37ft from the road. NO LIGHTS Barry James Robin, aged 19, who did not appear, was fined £5 for operating a vehicle at night without lights. Constable Gerald Gallagher said at 7.45 p.m. on August 22 he had stopped the defendant’s car In Madras street It had no head or tail-light. It was towing another vehicle which was showing lights. “The defendant has quite a record of driving offences." said Sergeant Tuck. Robin had ignored a standard fine notice sent to him. and it had been necessary to bring the matter before the Court. FOUND DRUNK

Patrick Augustus Stace. aged 40, was fined £3 on a charge of being found drunk in Cathedral square, having been convicted of drunkenness within the last six months.

CHARGE DISMISSED A chare* of using a motor vehicle without due ear* and attention against Jamea Kikuta wataw* Wereta. aged 31 (Mr D. J. Hill), was dlsmhwed. There was complete conflict of evidence and no real corroboration. th* Magistrate said. After evidence on a charge of negligent driving in Cranford street on August 19, against Edgar David Young, aged 33. a textile representative. had been heard, th* Magistrate reduced th* charge to on* of driving without du* ear* and attention.
