OWNER CLAIMS MEDAL
Lost For 20 Years
A medal found during the demolition of the bus shelter on the south side of Cathedral square on Tuesday was claimed cm Wednesday by Mr G. A. Green, aged 71, of Nursery road; Christchurch, who lost it more than 20 years ago.
The medal was presented to Mr Green by the residents of Glenroy in 1919, after heretumed from World War I Mr Green had worked at Glenroy for two years before he went overseas and worked there for another two after he returned. The medal is made of 9 carat gold and is in shape of a Maltese cross. He remembers the occasion on which he lost it. He was waiting for a taxi in the shelter with his daughter, then about three years bld, and she pulled the cross off its chain and dropped it behind the seat, out of reach. During the war Mr Green was a trooper in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and served in Palestine and Egypt. After the war he worked on grave registration in the Dardanelles and returned to Glenroy in August, 1919. The medal was presented about a week after his return. Mr Green said that there was a railway strike on at the time he returned and engine drivers and guards came on specially to bring the troops from Lyttelton to Christchurch. where the Automobile Association (Canterbury) supplied cars for those who did not have transport. After working at Glenroy. Mr Green came to Christchurch and worked on the Lyttelton wharves. He said that he was grateful to Mr L. J. ScuffeU for returning the medal to him after he had found it. r
