SUBMERGED ISLAND
Soviet Ship’s Discovery tN-Z. Press Assn.—Copyright l LONDON. Nov. 15. A Soviet research ship has discovered a submerged volcanic island in the South Pacific. Moscow Radio has reported, according to the Associated Press. The broadcast, which did not disclose the location of the island, said it was submerged at a depth of 18.700 feet. Its mountain is 18.6 miles wide and over 2 5 miles high. It is formed of two merged volcanoes, one of which has a plateau at the summit, the broadcast said. A report from a special correspondent aboard the Soviet science academy research ship Vityaz said underwater photo graphs showed the surface of the submerged island was inhabited by a variety of fauna. Samples of rock are now being examined to establish when the island became submerged. The broadcast said the discovery was of great value in the study of the geological history of the central sector of the pacific. |
