Weight-Lifting CHAMPIONSHIPS IN AUSTRALIA
Good Performances By N.Z. Contestants
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 16. D. C. Oliver, aged 24. caused the surprise defeat in the Australian weight-lift-ing championships of A. Shannos. claimed in Australia to be the “strongest man in the British Empire.” In doing so, Oliver recorded his best total of 9591 b to beat his own New Zealand record by 41b. Oliver returned from the championships, which were held on Saturday, three days before his three team-mates, who also performed excellently. R. Harris, the Wellington lifter, finished a close third in the heavy-weight with 8401 b. P. Nabney, from Auckland. lifted 201 b better than his previous best for 7601 b and third in the light-heavy-weight. The fourth member. P. Watson, of Hamilton, lifted almost his best total of 7001 b in the middle-weight section.
