REACTION TO BURSARIES
Mr Tennent’s Views (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 16. Some personal sacrifice or deferment of higher earnings was a necessary part of training for the professions. the Minister of Education (Mr Ten cent) said today, commenting on the reaction of the New Zealand University Students’ Association to the new university bursaries and higher tuition fees. It was quite natural that the official representatives of the students should feel that the bursary allowances were not as high as they would have wilted However, it must be borne in mind that one of the objectives of the bursaries was to provide a measure of assistance towards the cost of university study. “In the present time of financial stringency, when the correction of anomalies in other salary structures have had to be postponed, the bursary allowances announced are all that the Government and the University Granta Committee felt could be agreed to." *
