Tuberculosis Association Appeal

The Canterbury and W’est Coast Tuberculosis Association can fairly claim that it provides comprehensive help for unfortunate sufferers at a minimum of cost. Its many activities are financed by an expenditore of little more than £2OOO a year, of which about half is provided by the annual street appeal. It is able to do this because of the great amount of voluntary work performed by its members including the sanatorium service committee, which apart from the direct assistance it can arrange for patients and their families makes a notable contribution to the happiness and recovery of sufferers by showing them that the community has a personal interest in their welfare.

The association spends rather more than £ 1000 a year on direct help, largely clothing and food, but including such items as rent and travelling expenses. Among other services are a library, art therapy, and a cottage at Arthur’s Pass for the free use of former patients and their families The association also does much to help former patients adjust themselves to ordinary life. For the continuance of this valuable work the association depends on the support of the public. The response to the annual street appeal today should leave the association in no doubt that its service is appreciated as much by those fortunate enough not to need it as by those who do need it.
