AIRDROPS IN ANTARCTIC
Missions Near End After six more airdrops at Sky-Hi station in Ellsworth land, near the Sentinel range, the United States Air Force Globemasters at present operating from Christchurch will have completed their Antarctic mission for this season. The drops are scheduled to begin after November 15, and will include fuel, tractor parts and rations for a University of Wisconsin traverse party which will spend more than three months in Ellsworth Land. Airdrops at the United States scientific research Stations at the South Pole and Marie Byrd Land have been ' completed. Since October 24 more than 3700 drums of aviation and diesel fuel totalling more than 178,000 gallons and weighing 1000 tons have been dropped at the two stations. Since early in October the aircraft of the Ninth Troop Carrier Squadron and the men of the 1710th Aerial Port Squadron have transported more than 700 tons of cargo from Christchurch to McMurdo Sound. The cargo which was additional to that dropped by air over the inland stations, comprised navy and air force supplies and passengers.
