WALLABIES STALKED

Kawau Island Shooters (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Nov. 12. The war on Kawau Island's estimated 30.000 wallabies began with rifle fire early on Saturday morning as deerstalkers from Auckland and Northland set out to rid the island of the pest. The island’s normal calm was shattered spasmodically as the shooters, accompanied by other people who acted as beaters, began to move across the island with the intention of driving the animals towards its western end. The wallabies have troubled residents for years and have prevented natural regeneration of bush. No tallies of kills had been reported up to midday.
