DOUBTS ON ROAD SEALING PLANS
Motorists Express Disappointment At a meeting of the West Coast branch of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) held at Reefton recently concern was expressed by members regarding the promised six miles of tarsealing for this summer on the Lewis Pass road. The chairman. Mr E. McCarrigan. said that there now appeared to be some doubt whether the project would be carried out because of the new economy measures adopted by the Government. In view of the relatively small distance required to oe done, motorists from Canterbury and the West Coast, particularly, would be disappointed if no progress was made on this highway this year, he said. It was reported to the meeting that a number of Automobile Association signs had been damaged by .303 bullets. Some signs had as many as six holes through them. This vandalism has taken place in the Rahu Saddle and Lewis Pass areas'. The association has accepted an offer of an area of land from Mr W. Blackadder. Maruia, for development as a picnic area. Mr R. Hobbs, a Reefton representative. said that the land in question was an excellent spot, being about eight miles from Reefton in the vicinity of Branch bridge on the Reefton-Christchurch. highway. It intended to clear the site apd provide the necessary facilities as soon as possible.
