Vice-Regal Party At Riccarton Races
The third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting on Saturday was attended by the Governor-General and Lady Cobham. They were accompanied by the Hon. Mrs G. Grosvenor, a sister of Lord Cobham. Miss J. Wilding, Lady Cobham’s lady-in-wait-ing, and Captain D. Blundell and Captain H. Beverley, aides-de-camp to the Gover-nor-General. An unexpected coolness at Riccarton caused a varied fashion scene for mid-sum-mer. Every type of outfit from woollen suits, furtrimmed coats and warm stoles to light-weight ensembles in silk or cotton was seen. Smart outfits in beautiful colours and fabrics were featured. Lady Cobham wore an apricot coat over a slim green dress. Her head-hug-ging hat was of apple green straw trimmed across the front with apricot florets, and her green gloves matched her dress. Mrs Grosvenor chose a tailored navy linen ensemble teamed with a cerise pill-box with navy eye-veil. Miss Wilding wore a silk frock figured in white and tones of blue, and featuring a squared portrait collar. Her navy cloche hat was swathed with white veiling. Burgundy red accessories completed her outfit. Wool Suit Mrs Gilbert Grigg, wife of the club’s president, chose light-weight driftwood wool for her slim collarless suit. Her stitched silk hat, in coffee and taupe, had an upturned front brim. Mrs P. D. Hall, wife of the chairman of judicial stewards, wore a three-piece ensemble in grey and white houndstooth. The hip-length jacket featured a self rose on the lapel and the blouse top was fitting and made with tiny sleeves. Her black piH-box
was trimmed with a bow and veiling. Mrs D. W. J. Gould, wife of the honorary treasurer, chose an easy-fit navy linen suit worn with a matching navy and white pillbox. Guests of the club at Saturday’s meeting included the United Kingdom High Commissioner to New Zealand (Sir Francis CummingBruce) and Lady CummingBruce; Dr. and Mrs R. Fitzgerald (Oamaru); Mr and Mrs E. J. Ormond and Mrs D. Holden (Hawke’s Bay); Mr and Mrs Hamish Wilson <Rangitiki i: Mr and Mrs T. C. Lowry; Mrs R. Collier (Singapore); and Mrs S. Macßae (Heretaunga).
