LAND SPEED RECORD
Campbell’s Plans For Attempt (N^.P.A.-ttcuter—Comrright) LONDON. Nov. 10. Mr Donald Campbell, who flew into London last night from Sydney. announced that he would make an attempt on the world land speed record next April or May in Australia. Mr Campbell had been on a five-week trip to the dried-up bed of Lake Eyre to see if it was suitable for the attempt. “There are still one or two problems that could 'trip us up.” he said at London Airport. "But all being well. I should make an attempt in April or May. "After my crash at Utah it was obvious that a new site was necessary for the record. This place is ideal. It will change the whole scene of speed, distance and endurance tests,” Mr Campbell said. Lake Eyre, 500 miles north of Adelaide, in the desert, was a “terrifying place. There is no vegetation of any kind and we shall have to build a complete homestead.” Mr Compbell said. Mr Campbell said he had seen the Australian Prime Minister <Mr Menzies'. "He seems quite keen on the s'tempt being made on Lake Eyre. I did not ask for his permission Co go ahead as nothing is definite yet. I expect to make the final decision by Christmas and go out at the end af January,” Mr Campbell said.
