ROWING Well-Deserved Win For Boys 9 High School

The Anal of the annual secondary schools eights, rowed at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday, was Won by Christohsurch Boys’ High School by half a length from St. Andrew’s College. Conditions could hardly have been worse for rowing. Apart from the heat, the strong wind made the water a little livelier than most of the boys were accustomed to. and it caused a noticeable side drift in all the boats. On the results of Thursday’s heats a close contest was expected between Boys’ High School and St. Andrew's, tne winner in 1959 and 1960. in the first division race. The third crew making up the field was Christ's College A. All the crews started wen. but Boys’ High School, rowing at a slightly higher rating, quickly opened up a narrow lead and steadily Increased it to three-quarters of a length over the first half-mile. After having the advantage of the inside running on the first curve Christ’s College failed to hold St. Andrew’s in the middle reach of the course, and at the half-mile were more than half a length behind. St. Andrew’s, with the advantage on the second curve, made a vigorous attempt to overhaul the leader* and nearly succeeded in doing so. the margin at th* Chris?! College boathouse being less than a canvas. However, with 300 yards to go the experienced Boys’ High School crew Increased its rating and went on

to win by half a length. Christ’s S? U^r^. a ltaXth Boys’ High School’s win was deserved and popular. Christ’s College B had a dear cut win to the second division race from St. Bede’s Collate and Shirley Boys’ High School.
