16 Week-End City Fires

Fire stations in the Christchurch area received 16 calls to fires on Saturday and yesterday firemen had a second successive busy week-end. There were eight grass fires. All the fires were minor. Curtains and a kitchen window frame were damaged when an oven caught fire at the home of Joseph Harper Brizzell, at 230 Condell avenue, Bryndwr, at 8.40 am. on Saturday. Units from the Central and St. Albans stations attended. About 120 ft of a live boundary hedge was burnt at 256 Waterloo road about 10.30 a.m. The paintwork on the home of Mr R. Smith was damaged by radiated heat. One unit from the Sockburn station and the Paparua County Council fire tender extinguished the flames. One unit from the Woolston station attended a fire which destroyed about 12ft of a paling fence on the property of Mr C. Brenner, 13 Mating street. Slight damage was also done to a fowlhouse. A grass fire on property owned by the Austral Standard Cable Company, Ltd., in Halswell Junction road, was attended by a unit from the Sockburn station. It is believed to have been caused by a spark from a rubbish fire. One unit from the Central Station went to a grass fire on property owned by Mr A. B. Williamson, at 20 Armagh street, at 1.33 am. A rubbish fire on the property of Mr John Trengrove in Marine parade was extinguished by two unite from the New Brighton station at 334 pm. At 5.26 p.m. ohe unit from the Sumner station attended a fire in the McCormack's Bay rubbish dump. Units from the Central and Woolston stations extinguished a fire in the woodwork around the control points of the railway siding of Andersons, Ltd, at Woolston, at 6.11 pm. A grass fire on property owned by the Christchurch City Council in Lake Terrace road was put out by one unit from the St Albans station at 6.15 om. A hedge fire at Hornby Lodge, Carmen road, owned by the Health Department was extinguished by a unit from the Sockburn station at 12.14 p.m. yesterday. and Central stations at 2 p.m. Slight damage was done to a garage owned by Mr Allan Long at 17 Huxley street at 3.48 pm. Units from the Central and Sydenham stations attended. No damage was caused by a rubbish fire at 5.46 p.m. on the property of Mr D. Patchett, at 251 Marshland road. One unit from the St. Albans station attended. Units from the Central and Woolston fire stations attended a fire at 6.38 p.m. in a vacant section at 476 Pages road. The fire was caused by a heap of hedge cuttings being ignited. There was no damage. An oven fire at 8.48 p.m. at the home of Mrs M. Witbrock, 260 Memorial avenue, was extinguished by a unit from the St. Albans fire station. There was no damage.
