RESEARCH FELLOWS

Arrival In ■MZ

(NJE. Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. •Hie first senior research fellows selected by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research have arrived in New Zealand. They are Dr. R. Melville, a botanist from the world-renowed Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Dr. B. H. Howard, a biochemist from the Rowett Research Institute, near Aberdeen. The fellowships were Instituted to bring from overseas highly-qualified scientists of senior status to study New Zealand research problems.

Dr. Melville, who will work at the botany division of the D.5.1.R., is in charge of the Australian and New Zealand herbarium at Kew the main authorative centre for the classification of New Zealand native plants. Dr. Melville expects to make contributions to New Zealand botany. The personal experience of working here will help him to understand New Zealand flora, he hopes. Dr. Howard is an international authority on the biochemistry of the rumen protozoa. His research work in New Zealand could be of great help to the dairy industry, particularly in under- I standing the causes and I mechanisms of bloat. Dr. Howard will collaborate with the staff of the plant chemistry division of the D.S.IJL at Palmerston North.
