“Tosca”
Sir,—The New Zealand Opera Company is to be commended for seeking to heighten the gala atmosphere of “Tosca” by inviting the audience to wear formal dress. It is a pity that a jarring note was introduced by the screening of advertisements after the first act. Who was responsible for this grasping vulgarity?—Yours, etc., J. S. POLLARD. October 20, 1961. [The secretary-manager of the New Zealand Opera Company (Mrs K. J. Scott) said: “It is customary in all theatres normally showing films to screen advertisements in the intervals. We understand that theatre organisations are committed to contracts with advertisers far in advance, and this matter is quite out of the hands of the New Zealand Opera Company or any other lessee of the theatre.”]
