DHAULAGIRI WINS AT MOONEE VALLEY

MELBOURNE, October 29. The Victorian stayer, Dhaulagiri, in his first win of the season, beat the Sydney galloper, Sky High, in the weight-for-age W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley yesterday. After the race, the owner. Mr B. H. Crowley, .warned that Sky High was not a definite starter in the Melbourne Cup. A decision would be made after the MacKinnon Stakes next Saturday, he said. Dhaulagiri (9/2) finished with a terrific burst to beat hi* stablemate, New Statesman (14/1) by a neck. Sky High (4/9) was a neck away third. The New Zealander stayer. Blue Lodge, ran a good cup trial in finishing fourth. Blue Lodge was handy all the way. and for a few strides in the straight looked an almost certain f,*ce-getter. His owner. Mr L. Donald, said he was very pleased with the run. the first since Blue Lodge’s recent setback with shin soreness. The judge called for a photograph to decide the winner. Moonee Valley Cop The outsider. Baroda Gleam, further upset Melbourne Cup markets when he led all the way to win the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. Baroda Gleam, starting at 14/1. and carrying only 7-4, raced away in the straight to win by four lengths. Reinsman, starting at 30/1. ran the best Melbourne Cup trial to finish second half a length ahead of Torrid (8/D. The New Zealand stayer. Rural Loeb, one of the early favourites for the Melbourne Cup. finished a disappointing fourth and has eased in the market. Other promtnent cup candidates which were unplaced were Boran (fifth). Sparkly
(seventh), Grand Print (eighth). Nilarco (tenth), and Moonbridge (fourteenth). The favourite. Rural Loch, was backed from 7/2 to 7/4. Punters were critical of the jockey. A. G. Moore. In rushing his mount up five horses wide when he came from the tail-enders to be handy to the lead. The stewards later questioned Moore and accepted his explanation. Baroda Gleam, a former South Australian horse, added to the outstanding record of Australian-bred horses in the Moonee Valley Cup. Only one New Zealand-bred performer, Humber Hawk, has won the Moonee Valley Cup in the last nine years. Baroda Gleam is a five-year-old stallion by Star of Baroda from Lady Chatterley. The best of the New Zealand contingent in the finish was the third place-getter. Torrid. Previously regarded as better suited up to 10 furlongs.
