CRICKET N.Z. Batsmen Score Well In Drawn Second Match

(N-Z-P-A.-R«ut«r— Copyright) QUE QUE, October 26. The New Zealanders drew the second match of their tour against Rhodesian Districts today. Any hopes the tourists .entertained of quick wickets this morning were dashed when the districts, 141 for two overnight, went on to make 347 for eight (declared), in reply to the New Zealanders’ 326 for five (declared), on the opening day.

The visitors had valuable baiting practice in the final three hours’ play. When the match ended they had scored 245 for the loss of three wickets in the second innings. A. Taberer, the Districts opening bat, who was undefeated with 87 at the close yesterday, went on to reach 101 in 156 minutes, with 70 in boundaries from 13 fours and three sixes before Motz caught him near the squareleg boundary off Sparling. Taberer was the first batsman to score a century against the tourists. Later a hard-hit 84 by the left-hahder, D. Bailey, supported by the captain, N. Waller (40), helped Districts to consolidate its position and the innings was declared with a 21-run lead. The New Zealanders toiled for three hours in the fierce heat and the bowling on a docile wicket, took heavy punishment. M. E. Chapple used his bowlers in short spells, but they got no assistance from the pitch and if the New Zealanders faltered in fielding it was understandable in the extreme heat. The unusual number of 52 extras contributed to Rhodesian Districts’ total. The fast bowler, G. A. Bartlett, was no-balled 14 times, mostly for overstepping the line and allowing the drag to cut the line.

In spite of this, Bartlett’s performance was improved. His control was much better. The ball which knocked back D. Bailey’s middle stump for Bartlett’s first wicket of the tour came off a perfect length. R. C. Motz bowled well in patches and was no-balled five times for. overstepping the line. He had N. Waller in trouble several times before trapping him leg before and. with the next ball, got B. Charsley to touch one into P. T. Barton's gloves behind the wicket. Barton and S. N. McGregor shared the wicketkeeoifeg duties, with A. E. Dick absent with a badly bruised finger. That it was a batsman's wicket was clearly illustrated by the fact that 12 hours’ play produced 918 runs, while only 16 wickets feU. The New Zealand batsmen were never in trouble when they batted a second time. J. W. Guy and J. T. Sparling were sound in putting on 137 in 101 minutes for the opening stand, their second century nartaershio tf the match. Guy hit 83 in little more than two hours. With 12 boundaries, giving only one chance, while Sparling got 57 in 101 minutes, with six fours. A crowd of about 600 watched today’s play. The New Zealanders win leave

for Salisbury by car tomorrow morning and play a return match against Rhodesia in a match beginning on Saturday. SCORES;—
