Golden Howe First With Light Weight

Quite Able was beaten by Golden Howe and Navarone in a mile gallop at Riccarton yesterday, but did not lose favour for the President’s Handicap at Rangiora tomorrow. Quite Able was ridden by C. T. Wilson, and was giving weight to his companions.

Golden Howe, with N. Eastwood up, won the trial. He is an acceptor, but not a certain starter, tomorrow. Golden Howe ran his mile on the trial grass in Im in 47 2-seec, the last seven furlongs in Imin 31 l-s*ec, and the last half-mile in 50 l-Osec. He finished three-quarter* of a length clear of Navarone (Ann tag), and then there was half a length to Quite Able. A start for Golden Howe is in doubt because he is a long strider and might not be at ease on the Rangiora track. Quite Able is snother long strider. but the banked turns on the reconstructed track could lighten his task. Corduroy (Taggart) sprinted five furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec. He accelerated quickly to run the first furlong in 12sec, and the first two furlongs in 34 2-jsec Llantana (M. Skelton) impressively beat Cenlesimo (Henneberry) over five furlongs. STRONG FINISH Centesimo was tearing along three lengths clear after two furlongs, but Llantana kept up a solid, steady run fa the straight and won the gaUop by three-parts of a length. Llantana ran the distance in Imin 1 4-ssec and the final three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. Llantana is snail, but has thrived on her latest racing, and should run well at Rangiora. Arapohe (Hadfield) sprinted three furlongs in 39 3-dsec. This lightly-raced sister to Cheyenne has not been easy to keep sound. Methuselah (Coulter) led Bar Koehba (Quayle) by hatf a length and was clear of Hems finishing half a mile m 53 34foec. On the plough. Hunted <N. Eastwood) sprinted seven torfongs In hnto 33 l-Ssec, the lest half-mil* fa 53 2-3 »«. He was keen to quicken. Gsbelle (Eastwood) dashed in from th* half-mile to 49 3-ssee. She ran th* final three furlongs attractively fa 37sec.

A firm frack at Rangiora could help her to recapture her best form, which was of a good standard last autumn. > Donna Maria (Baldwin) finished pace work by running three furlongs fa 41 S-ssec. SCHOOLING Studio, which is to run on the second day of the North Canterbury meeting, did pace work on the plough after some schooling over hurdles. Ridden by N. Cowles, he jumped the pony hurdles proficiently. Tried at a standard hurdle, he ran off. then baulked, but finally jumped it cleanly. Studio was schooled while K. J. Ihomeon had him at Otaki. Cheyenne ha« not recovered from Hi* lameness he was showing after his win in the Walnul Handicap at Trentham last Saturday. His trainer, V. D. Clutterbuck, fears trouble in a Joint, not in a foot, and is not hopeful of having him active for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Th* Joint will be X-rayed. _ r £? ncisco> • toilur* to th* Wellington Guineas, will be giy*o an easy time for a few weeks.
