Television Advertising
Sir.—Little comfort can be found in the assurance by the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Kinsella) that television standards will not be lowered. Right at the outset advertising standards are at the low level reached by the ZB stations. Commercial radio was widely opposed in this country, but was introduced with “assurances” which have progressively gone by the board. Particularly in the last year or two there has been a rapid deterioration in standards .and an increase in quantity. Four successive commercials are now commonplace, and we are teased and tricked by every possible subterfuge to delay the disgusted turn-off. High licence fees should provide a service unspoiled by unwanted commercial insincerities. The only place for a commercial television service is on an additional channel, under private enterprise.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. October 17, 1961.
