RUGBY Lincoln College To Play In Town Competition

The Ellesmere Rugby Subunion has decided to allow Lincoln College to play in the town competitions next season. When the sub-union met on Monday evening it decided to give Lincoln College two choices. Lincoln College could field its A team in the town competition or it could enter all its teams if it so chose. The sub-union decided this to prevent the dub from being split. Mr M. R. Barnett, president of Ellesmere sub-union, said yesterday: “This is entirely an amicable arrange, ment between Lincoln College and ourselves. Lincoln has done much for Ellesmere and country Rugby in the 1 ast. We appreciate the ability and potential of the Lincoln College players and we want them to have every opportunity. The college is growing and we feel that it is in the best interest of their own and sub-union football that they be allowed to play in the town competitions.” At a fecial meeting called by the Canterbury Rugby Union half-way through the season, delegates rejected an amendment to rule 7 of the permits committee which was aimed at preventing Lincoln College students from playing in the town competition when Lincoln College becomes a part of the Univer. sity of Canterbury next year. The decision of the Ellesmere sub-union is subject to

the approval of the Canterbury Rugby Sub-unions, which will meet soon to discuss the matter. Acceptance Is thought to be a formality only. Lincoln College has dominated Ellesmere Rugby for some seasons, winning the senior competition for the last 10 years. In this period, J. Hotop (1952), J. B. Buxton r 1955-56), W. J. Whineray (1957) and K. R.. Tremain (1969-61), gained All Black, honours while playing for the college.
