MEN AT THE ROSS ISLAND CAMP in McMurdo Sound gather for the first flag-raising ceremony of this season’s operations. When these photographs wore taken, the temperature at McMurdo was quite high—only minus 18 deg Fahrenheit—winds of up to 38 knots were blowing. Swirling snow encrusted the clothing, eyebrows, and beards of the men assembled for the brief ceremony. It was the first flag-raising at the camp since April 23 this year.
