Imported Grocery lines Scarce
. [From Our Grocery Correspondent] Many imported grocery lines are already scarce or will be so before long. Two further instances of the effects, of import controls have been brought forcibly to the notice of grocers. Imported stocks of Nescafe are now exhausted, and there will be no more Nescafe available until the New Zealand factory has built up initial stocks. While Nescafe is off the market there is an extra demand for W. Gregg and Company’s instant coffee, which is now very scarce, Distributors are on a strict ration. T. 3. Edmonds, Ltd., now advise that their gelatine supplies have been reduced by half. The company will ration jellies until further notice. Several brands and packs of canned green peas, peaches, apricots, asparagus, sweet corn, and orange juice are also scarce. With stocks short and further shortages likely to appear. the outlook for Christmas trading is not hopeful. Apple Sauce.—A new product is about to be released by S. Kirkpatrick of Nelson—a I2oz ean of apple sauce. It has a good flavour which should prove popular and requires a minimum of preparation. The cans are attractively labelled and are expected to retail at Is IM each. Peanut Butter Price.—New prices have just been declared by the Sanatorium Health Food Com Maj for Betto peanut butter. The new price* are as fol-
lows: 4oz Is ltd, Bc® 2s 6d, Boz 3s Id, 12oz 4s, and 2ilb«jars Ils 3d. ( Cake Fruit Mix.—From now until Christmas is the main selling time for cake fruit mixes and the processors are preparing for this period. The packers of Goldpack mixed fruit are producing a, new patterned carton Tn attractive colours containing a hermetically sealed polythene inner bag. The price advised for the litre pack is 3s 4d. New Sexson’s Pnmea—Quotations are now starting to come through agents for the new season’s prune crop in California. Reports state that th* crop is a good one and it is now being harvested. Opening prices show a decrease on old crop quotes which had increased as the year progressed. Although New Zealand's main supply comes from this market, the new season’s fruit is not exported for some time. American Wee.—There appears to be little variation to the prices of the new season’s rice and those of last year. There has been no definite information a* to the size Of th* crop, but price* seem to indicate that production was rattsthe rice raowimt areas rut whether the pnws of this year’s crop .are likely to increase. j
