GRADES IN DRAMA

Tendency To Mislead

Because they tend to mislead the publie, the terms A and B grade may not appear on programmes of future festivals of the Christchurch and North Canterbury Area of the British Drama League. The president (Mr W. E. Cook) told the branch's annual meeting last evening that the public was inclined to stay away from plays marked B grade. The suggestion that these plays were of second grade quality was wrong, said Mr Cook. He said an A grade team was really a team competing for the J. L. Hay Trophy and a B grade team one competing for the Muirhead trophy. The incoming committee will consider these proposals. Reviewing the year’s activities. Mr Cook said in spite of efforts to increase the branch's individual members. the numbers were decreasing. The branch now had an individual membership of 73. Of the 26 clubs affiliated to the branch, 24 had renewed membership, said Mr Cook. There were two big events on the calendar for next year, Mr Cook said. Mrs Nora Ratcliff, who visited Christchurch in 1959. would make a return visit: and the Dominion finals would be held in Christchurch in late August or early September. Officers elected were:— President. Mr W. E. Cook; vice-president, Miss E. Neville: secretary, Mr L. Haystop; treasurer, Mr C. Lucas; committee, Messrs B. Calvert, B. Gilpin, J. Grubb, N. Robinson. Mesdames M. Eason. J. Eggleton, E. P. Giddens, D. Gilpin, Miss M. Crosbie.
