WELLINGTON, Oct. 12. The Government has approved the calling of tenders for the erection of the first stage of the new science buildings for the University of Canterbury, the Minister of Education •Mr Tennent) today advised the chairman of the University Grants Committee (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn). ‘This, I believe, will be one of the largest architectural projects to be carried out in New Zealand, and certainly the largest contract for the university,” said Mr Tennent ‘lt underlines the fact that we are entering a

period when great capital expenditure will have to be faced for higher education. “This group of buildings has been designed by the Government Architect. The planning and construction have been divided into two stages. The first, for which tenders are about to be called, comprises an eightstorey block for physics and chemistry, mathematics, psychology and philosophy, a two-storey block providing central lecture theatres, and a two-storey block for library and administrative facilities. “Stage two is the smaller section comprising a three-

storey block for botany and geology and a six-story block for zoology and geography. “Plans for the second stage are still being drawn, but it is expected both stages will be complete within four years of the commencement of building. “A great deal of planning ha* been required to bring this project to it* present stage. Taking into consideration the complexity of the architectural and other problem* which had to be overcome before tenders could be called, I think the work has progressed with creditable speed ”
