CITIZENS’ TAX
Local Body Finance (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 12. The Hutt County Council decided today it would agree to a citizens’ tax being levied provided the money was used to establish a local body loans finance corporation from which local bodies could draw loans at low interest rates for essential services < and works. ■ It will place this proposal before the next ward meeting of the Counties Association which asked for views on the introduction of the tax. ■ < Local authorities all over New Zealand were advertising for loan money without a hope of getting it, said the chairman (Mr C. R. Mills). “It’s a clawing game with everyone competing for the little loan money available,” he said. A citizens’ tax of 2d in the £ 1 would bring in about £7 million a year.
