PARLIAMENT Aircraft Included In Piracy Clause
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 12. The House of Representatives today adopted an amendment to the Crimes Bill to include hi-jacking of aircraft in the crime of piracy. Pirates or hi-jackers will be liable to life imprisonment if they murder, attempt to murder or cause injury to anyone while they are attempting to take over a ship or aircraft. In other cases of piracy
they will be liable to 14 years’ imprisonment. The Attorney-General (Mr Hanan) inserted the amendment to include aircraft after Mr D. Maclntyre (Government, Hastings) pointed out that the piracy clauses in the bill referred to ships but not to aircraft. “People seem to think piracy is a thing of the past, but recent cases of hi-jack-ing aircraft overseas show it is not,” Mr Maclntyre said. Mr Hanan said the omission of any reference to aircraft in the piracy clauses was an oversight.
